Consistency Over Intensity
When we identify a problem, we either procrastinate or go after it massively and then stop. This often leads to poor results and low motivation. So, what do we do about it? I love the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. In the book, Clear says:
“Most people need consistency more than they need intensity. Intensity makes a good story. Consistency makes progress.”
Consistency Defined
Consistency is regular, repeated action towards a desired outcome. It is the cornerstone of habits and goals. While intensity is characterized by short bursts, such as running a marathon or writing a book in 30 days, consistency is about sustained progress over time, like never missing a workout for two years or writing in your journal every week.
The Wisdom of Consistency
The core principles behind consistency include small changes, marginal gains, and the power of compounding. To sustain consistency, we rely on systems, processes, and routines. In contrast, the fallacy of intensity lies in the myth of overnight success and the risk of burnout due to unsustainable bursts of effort.
Benefits of Consistency
Consistency offers stability and predictability. It lowers the risk of overwhelming yourself and reduces fatigue, helping to prevent burnout. Consistency also cultivates discipline and resilience, qualities that are essential for long-term success.
Practical Strategies for Consistency
- Set Realistic Goals and Expectations: Break down tasks into manageable steps.
- Create Routines and Rituals: Develop habits that support your goals.
- Leverage Accountability and Support: Coaching can be a significant help in maintaining consistency.
Overcoming Challenges
Staying consistent involves dealing with setbacks and obstacles. It’s crucial to stay motivated during plateaus by focusing on small, incremental progress. Practice self-compassion and celebrate small wins, as these are more impactful than infrequent big wins.
Case Studies and Personal Examples
- Financial Consistency: Investing consistently over time, such as in the S&P 500, can yield significant returns due to the power of compounding.
- Health and Fitness: Tracking calories and weight, and maintaining a consistent exercise routine with a purpose for growth and longevity.
- Business and Personal Growth: My podcast and business success are not overnight achievements. They result from consistently showing up and sticking to a plan.
- Mindfulness and Daily Fun: Incorporating a little mindfulness and joy into each day can sustain you more effectively than occasional vacations.
Embracing a Consistent Mindset
To cultivate a consistent mindset, embrace the philosophy of continuous and never-ending improvement (CAN I). Focus on progress, not perfection, and build resilience through practice and rituals. I often joke with my dentist clients that I wish for them to have a “boring” practice—steady, predictable, and profitable with no drama. This slow and steady growth is preferable to the volatile ups and downs of intensity.
The Journey, Not the Destination
Remember, it’s the journey, not the destination, that truly matters. Enjoy the process and find joy in the consistency. Even after achieving your goals, happiness lies in the journey itself. While intensity has its place, make consistency your number one ally.
Embrace small, consistent actions towards your big goals, and enjoy the process every step of the way.
