Managing emotional energy is vital for peak performance. Self-confidence, self-control, empathy, and social skills optimize success and well-being.

In our quest for peak performance and personal fulfillment, it is crucial to recognize that managing our emotional energy is at the heart of full engagement. As explored in the book “The Power of Full Engagement,” emotional capacity plays a central role in our ability to expend and recover energy at the emotional level, influencing the quality and quantity of available energy. We must skillfully manage our emotions and cultivate positive emotional energy.

In a prior talk, I discussed the first step of energy management: physical energy. To enhance physical energy, prioritize rest, proper nutrition, regular exercise, stress management, and an energizing environment, and take micro-breaks to prevent burnout and improve overall well-being and productivity.

In this talk, we delve into the key principles of energy, which is the second energy pillar, from the book and how they contribute to our success and well-being.

  1. Cultivating Self-Confidence:

Self-confidence is the cornerstone of emotional energy. When we believe in ourselves and our abilities, we approach challenges with optimism and determination. By focusing on our strengths and past successes, we bolster our reserves, fostering a sense of empowerment and readiness to take on new endeavors.

Example: Sarah, an aspiring public speaker, struggled with self-doubt. However, she attended self-confidence workshops, which taught her to reframe negative thoughts and affirm her capabilities. As a result, she embraced the stage with newfound emotional energy, delivering impactful speeches that inspired and engaged her audience.

  1. Practicing Self-Control (and Self-Regulation):

Self-control is the art of managing our emotions effectively. It involves acknowledging negative emotions, understanding their triggers, and choosing how to respond constructively. By developing self-regulation, we prevent negative emotions from derailing our focus and performance.

Example: Fred, a high-stress executive, used to react impulsively to workplace challenges, leading to strained relationships and decreased productivity. After implementing mindfulness practices, he learned to pause and evaluate his responses. As a result, he gained better self-control, enabling him to make thoughtful decisions and navigate conflicts with composure.

  1. Nurturing Social Skills (or Interpersonal Effectiveness):

Effective social skills contribute to energy by fostering positive relationships and building a supportive network. Interpersonal effectiveness allows us to collaborate, communicate, and resolve conflicts with grace, which promotes a healthy environment.

Example: John, a team leader, noticed that conflicts and misunderstandings within his team drained emotional energy. He invested in team-building exercises, improving communication and fostering a sense of camaraderie. The positive interactions among team members led to heightened energy and improved overall performance.

  1. Cultivating Empathy:

Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, enhances emotional energy by promoting a sense of connection and compassion. Being empathetic allows us to build deeper relationships and support one another, fostering a positive emotional climate.

Example: Lisa, a manager, noticed a decline in her team’s energy after a series of setbacks. By actively listening and acknowledging her team’s emotions, she demonstrated empathy and created a safe space for open communication. As a result, team members felt supported, and their energy rebounded, leading to increased productivity.


Energy is a resource that influences our ability to thrive and excel in every aspect of life. Understanding the key factors that fuel emotional capacity – self-confidence, self-control, social skills, and empathy – empowers us to optimize our energy for peak performance and personal fulfillment. By accessing positive emotions, managing negative ones, engaging in enjoyable activities, cultivating meaningful relationships, and expanding our capacity, we set ourselves on a path of sustained success and well-being.
